Ingenuity Breakfast Event – 22 January 2019
Have you ever shared what you thought was a brilliant idea and been underwhelmed by the response? Only to feel frustrated when later someone presents the same idea and gets the credit? My research into how creative ideas are evaluated and gain acceptance explores why some business ideas are destined to be recognised – and others are not. Sharing stories from my own fieldwork and research, I show how who and what we recognise as creative is influenced by our individual and collective beliefs about what is legitimate. I’ll share how the recognition of creativity is a ‘re-cognition’; as we ‘recall to mind’ whether an idea fits with our existing social norms as we evaluate it. Plus, I’ll share simple social strategies any business owner can use to help gain more acceptance for their ideas and overcome resistance – particularly for ideas which are novel or go against the status quo.
Assistant Professor Rachael Lamb, of the Haydn Green Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Nottingham University Business School will lead this session. Rachael worked for twenty years in business before joining the University and understands firsthand the common challenges SMEs face in growing their companies.
Assistant Professor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Rachael’s research explores how creative ideas are recognised and gain legitimacy in business. Her most recent project examines how pressure to deliver current products and services influences the ability of companies to recognise emerging ideas. Rachael teaches Innovation Management and Entrepreneurial Creativity at the University of Nottingham and has worked on innovation projects with SMEs and with organisations such as Waitrose, Rolls-Royce and the National Health Service.

From a business? Sorry, but the Shop Window isn’t the time for a “60 second pitch”. Feedback from our network members tells us that our businesses want something different from Ingenuity. But it is your opportunity to do some research of your own: request volunteers for new product or service trials, ask if anyone has any recommendations for difficult-to-find suppliers, or simply share some news that the audience might not find out about otherwise.
From the University? If you have a business-facing project or want to work with local small and medium-sized businesses as part of your research, this is your opportunity to make contact with business owners. Our network members are already interested in what happens at the University and may be interested in participating with your initiative.
