Since it was established 10 years ago, The Ingenuity Network has grown into a thriving community of over 1800 individuals. Here, we’ll be featuring examples of how some of those individuals have benefited from working with The University of Nottingham. This month our featured member is Nicholas Braddon at Barker Brettell LLP.

Nicholas Braddon is a patent attorney and nick1-260x410partner at Barker Brettell LLP. At the company he is responsible for drafting and prosecuting patient applications for inventions in the fields of science and engineering. Nick works with a variety of customers including inventors, SMEs and universities advising clients on patent infringement and validity.

Barker Brettell LLP offers specialist legal services for all areas of Intellectual Property (IP) including patents, designs, trade marks and copyright. This company works with businesses and organisations of all shapes and sizes to ensure their IP assets are properly protected.

The Ingenuity Network has been an extremely valuable platform for Barker Brettell. Speaking on their relationship, Nicholas said:

“I first connected with The Ingenuity Network a few years ago, when I attended one of Chris Barnatt’s future-gazing events. Since then, I have attended several more of the network’s events and have found that the speakers are invariably engaging. I find the network useful for making connections with businesses, university staff and academics. I also took the opportunity to give a short shop-window pitch at one of the breakfast networking events and would encourage others to do the same.”

“As a firm, engaging with the network helps us build our profile in Nottingham and the East Midlands area.”

Since joining the Ingenuity Network, Barker Brettell have worked closely with the University of Nottingham and have had access to the University’s research facilities and expertise. This has led to an expansion of Barker Brettell as a business, as Nick said:

“We have worked for The University of Nottingham on patents and trade marks for several years. We also work for some spin-out companies from The University. In 2014, we opened an office on The University of Nottingham Innovation Park to better serve our existing clients and to raise our profile in Nottingham and the East Midlands region.”

Nick explains that he would recommend the networking events organised by Ingenuity to other businesses because the network has broadened Barker Brettell’s client base:

“The networking events have enabled us to meet with businesses in the area and have provided us with a platform to explain to people how we can help them. There is a really good opportunity for networking and also a hearty breakfast laid on to reward attendees for making such an early start to their day.”

“Overall I would recommend attending a networking event. The topics are thought-provoking and well-presented.”
